I have added a number of new photographs to our flickr site. These include photographs from this weekends U2 concert as well as from the G20 anti globalisation protests that were recently held in Melbourne.

You can find the photos here.

50th anniversary issue of New Scientist

Anyone who has an inquisitive mind may be interested in the current edition of new scientist magazine. This weeks addition is the 50th anniversary addition of the publication. It features articles and commentary by Rodger Penrose, John Barrow, Paul Davies and Steven Pinker among others.

In particular the magazine features an article by Penrose on the nature of reality. Penrose points out that he believes reality to be consistent of three different things:

  • Those that make up the conscious world (i.e. the things that you think).
  • The material world of atoms, molecules, planets, space, time etc
  • The Platonic world of mathematics

The main point of the article is that the behaviours of the physical world are so closely aligned to the predictions and systems of mathematics that to say mathematics is simply an emergent phenomenon of the mind or material world is likely to be incorrect.

Anyway this edition of new scientist is particularly interesting… a good read.
